No doubt faith is among the most important and decisive categories related to human being. For we human beings the concern of happiness and final felicity is older and more prominent than any other concern and faith is the cornerstone for human salvation and blessedness.
The present essay is intended to explain the meaning and concept of faith in transcendent theosophy. An exact survey of Mulla Sadra’s and his followers’ philosophical works show that faith in their view and in Sadra’s in particular, is equal to knowledge in the sense of logical affirmation and scholarly certainty. However, reflection on religious sources and texts as well as views of other philosophers and theologians of the category of faith and related issues show the opposite view that faith is distinct and beyond from knowledge. The author of the present article is to discover the true view of Mulla Sadra in this regard and give a critical analysis of it on the basis of rational and revealed arguments and finally give a proper response to the question on the nature of faith in the perspective of transcendent philosophy.

The term copulative existence is used in three different ways: the first being of non-nominal meaning that belongs to propositions as connective element as opposed to propositional being in existential propositions which is nominal meaning i.e. taken by itself, it is conceivable with no other concept from without. In second usage copulative existence is taken as being in itself for other than itself. According to third usage which is coined by Mulla Sadra this term is taken to mean a dependent being as against independent existence in discussions of cause and effect. According to Mulla Sadra existence of all contingent beings is but the very existential poverty and a pure relation to the Cause. That is why they are called wojūd-e-rābet i.e. copulative being while earlier philosophers had deemed such beings as related to the cause or in their term wojūd-e-rābeti. The present article is to survey these three terms and gives a due attention to the explanation of copulative being in transcendent theosophy.

The problem of creation or eternity of the world has been the origin of many controversies among Islamic philosophers and theologians. Early Muslim philosophers maintained the eternity of world, which was opposed by theologians who held it to be created in time. In explaining the view of temporal creation some of theologians assumed a concept of time devoid of any properties of real time which was called by them as “imaginary time”. In abstracting this concept of time they mainly rely on divine subsistence and continuance of his existence. Opponents, on the other hands, have taken the divine subsistence to be supra-temporality i.e. beyond any time so that it is impossible to abstract an entity in flux by nature from an essentially self-Subsistent Essence. Using rational-analytic method, the present article is to examine the arguments for and against imaginary time which if proved will have a lot of significance in discussing motion, creation and eternity.

Causality is usually taken to be understood as external causation and so in propter-quid demonstration (reasoning from cause to effect) in which philosophers speak of the causality of middle term to reach conclusion it is understood in the same way. Accordingly Allama Tabatabae deemed this sort of proof to be impossible in “First philosophy” because its subject-matter is “being qua being” beyond which there is nothing to act as its cause and so there is no way to use the sort of argument in which the middle term is the external cause for the conclusion. In criticizing this position the present article is to put emphasis, among other points, on the view that the causality in question has a broader meaning to conclude both external and analytic causality. In this way by making reference to the words of great thinkers which can shed light on the nature of causality of middle term in propter-quid proof which should interpreted as analytic rather than external and the demonstrations used in “first philosophy” are of this type.

In view of the fact that human life is based on the bulk of his practical and theoretical knowledge, it is essential to see what constitutes as bases of his epistemic system and how reliable and solid they are. Though the epistemic discussions are sporadic in the works of Mulla Sadra he has dealt with them with high degree of accuracy and intricacy, which indicates his deep thought and mindfulness of epistemological treatments. One of the most fundamental of these discussions is that of innate perceptions which constitute the basis of certainty of our acts of knowledge. Belief in and reliance on this foundation is the standard of validity and value of human perceptions. The article is intended to examine Mulla Sadra’s epistemological principles and draw attention to his treatment of foundationalism and its functions.
