Abstract

One of the main concerns of Islamic philosophers is the realization of moderation in domain of human soul. The question is: what is the status of this problem in philosophical system and practical wisdom of Muslim philosophers? What role does it play in individual, civil and political life and what do we mean by it? In responding to these questions it is claimed that moderation is a balance and equilibrium of the faculties of soul which is obtained when reason and revealed law govern the faculties of soul. In this view moderation is requisite for soul perfection and underlies all civil virtues and sorts of spiritual felicity. Nevertheless Islamic philosophers have not ignored the prominent role of the society and virtuous politics in promoting and developing the ethical quality of moderation. It is in this way that individual becomes civilized and philanthropist so that he can pursue his self-interests as well as the interests of others and as result there will be convergence and concordance of welfares rather than conflicts of interests
