Abstract

To traditionalists art is of special significance. They divide it into three sacred, traditional and religious types. Sacred art is held to be of divine origin. Dr. Nasr regards such Sufi audition and dance as sacred art. Now the question is which Quranic verse or Islamic tradition designates the permission of these acts. In other words, can one infer their divine origin of permissibility from any literal meaning of Quranic verses and hadiths? Since sacred art is deeply connected with spiritual Paths in Sufism, the present article attempts to respond the question by consulting Sufi works using descriptive analytic method. Findings of this research indicate that although attempted to base the legality of audition and dance on some verses and hadiths and even responded the objections raised by their opponents, the revealed proof provided by Sufis are inconclusive and there is no verse nor tradition to signify lawfulness of Sufi audition and dance.  Serious criticisms are to be made against the allegedly revealed arguments made by Sufis in favour of their view in question
