Criticism of the Hypothesis of Eliminating Mental Process in the Denotation of Proper and Common Nouns Based on the Thought of Allamah Mesbah Yazdi

Abstract

Some analytical philosophers, such as Russell and Wittgenstein I, believe that to overcome the problems of mentalism, descriptive phrases in propositions referring to the external world must end in a term in the subject area that refers to its object outside without evoking any meaning in the mind and directly (Logical Atomism). Demonstrative pronouns and proper nouns play such a role in the realm of vocabulary. In agreement with them, Donlan, Putnam, and Kripke also proposed the causal theory of reference; Kripke believes that this kind of denotation is not specific to particular things, but also applies to the reference of common nouns to types of beings in the physical world, and provides reasons for his claim. This article first explains the most important reasons for this theory using a descriptive-analytical method and after criticizing them, presents the view of Islamic philosophy on the topic of "naming" with emphasis and inspiration from the ideas of Allamah Mesbah Yazdi. This approach, by analyzing the construction quality of particular (juz'ī) and essential concepts, concludes that the transfer through demonstrative pronouns and names is not fundamentally a direct transfer, but is facilitated through the representation of aforementioned concepts. The important implications of each of these two perspectives will also be examined.

یرى کوکبة من فلاسفة التحلیل، وفی طلیعتهم راسل وفتغنشتاین الأول، أنّ التخلّص من معضلة النزعة الذهنیة یقتضی أن تنتهی العبارات الوصفیة فی القضایا الدالّة على العالم الخارجی، بعبارة فی ناحیة الموضوع، تکون دلالتها بمتعلَّقها فی الخارج مباشرة، دون خطور أیّ معنى إلى الذهن (الذرّیة المنطقیة). وفقاً لهذا الإطار الفلسفی، فتتولّى أسماء الإشارة والأعلام أداء هذا الدور فی النظام اللغوی. تماشیا مع ذلک، فقدّم دونلان وباتنم وکریبکی ما یُعرف بالنظریة العلّیة، حیث یؤکّد هذا الأخیر على أنّ هذا النمط من الدلالة لا ینحصر على الذوات المتشخّصة فحسب، بل ینطوی أیضاً على الإحالة من الأسماء العامة إلى أنواع الموجودات فی العالم الفیزیائی، معزّزا نظریته بعدد من الحجج والأدلة. انطلاقا من ذلک، تسعى هذه الدراسة، من خلال المنهج الوصفی ـ التحلیلی، إلى کشف الستار عن أبرز المرتکزات الأساسیة لهذه النظریة، ثم تقدیم نظریة الفلسفة الإسلامیة المتمثلّة فی مبحث الوضع والتسمیة، ترکیزا على آراء العلّامة مصباح الیزدی. وتبیّن أیضا، من خلال تقصّی کیفیة بناء المفهوم الجزئی والمفهوم الماهوی، أنّ عملیة الانتقال عن طریق أسماء الإشارة والأعلام لیست مباشرة فقط، بل تتحقّق بواسطة حکایة المفاهیم المتقدّمة أیضا. وأخیرا، تسعى الدراسة أن تسلّط الضوء على النتائج المهمة لهاتین المقاربتین الفلسفیتین.
