Justifying Personal Identification with Mental Criteria; Philosophical Challenges and Theological Consequences

Abstract

One of the important debates in the philosophy of mind is the issue of "personal identity"; that is, people still have numerical unity despite their quantitative and qualitative changes. Every person intuitively and definitively understands his personal identity, but providing a rational explanation of the "criterion" of said identity is a complex issue exposed many disagreements. Most of the philosophers of the mind have considered "mental continuity" as the criterion of personal identity by denying the single human soul and considering physical continuity insufficient. This article aims to explain and evaluate the mental criterion, using the analytical and critical method, after explaining the different interpretations of the criterion, from a philosophical point of view, to the internal inconsistencies of this theory, such as "the problem of mental branching" and "the ineffectiveness of continuity in justifying the claim" and then points to some theological consequences of the mental criterion and shows that this theory is not compatible with some definitive teachings of religion such as resurrection and the issue of reward and punishment and logically leads to opposing them.

أحد المواضیع المهمة فی فلسفة الذهن هو مسألة "الهویة الشخصیة"؛ بمعنى أن الأفراد، بالرغم من التغیرات الکمیة والنوعیة التی تحدث لهم، یبقون متوحدین عددیًا. کل فرد یدرک هویته الشخصیة بشکل شهودی وقاطع، لکن تقدیم تفسیر عقلی لـ"معیار" هذه الهویة یمثل قضیة معقدة ومحل خلاف کبیر بین الفلاسفة. معظم فلاسفة العقل، مع إنکارهم للروح المجردة وعدم کفایة الاستمراریة الجسدیة، یعتبرون "الاستمراریة النفسیة" معیارًا للهویة الشخصیة. تهدف هذه المقالة إلى توضیح وتقییم هذا المعیار النفسی، باستخدام المنهج التحلیلی والانتقادی. بعد توضیح مختلف التقاریر للمعیار النفسی، تتناول المقالة من منظور فلسفی التناقضات الداخلیة فی هذه النظریة مثل "مسألة انشعاب العقل" و"عدم کفاءة الاستمراریة فی تبریر الهویة العینیة"، وتنتقل لاحقًا إلى بعض المتطلبات اللاهوتیة للمعیار النفسی. تُظهر المقالة أن هذه النظریة تتعارض مع بعض التعالیم الدینیة القطعیة مثل المعاد ومسألة الثواب والعقاب، وتوصل إلى أن هذا التعارض منطقی ویؤدی إلى مخالفة هذه التعالیم.
