Clarifying the identity of Islamic science and its distinctions largely depends on explaining its criteria. Certain theorists in this field, either briefly or in detail, have addressed this subject and have generally proposed three criteria: subject matter, purpose, and method. The problem addressed in this study is to discover the criteria of Islamic science from the perspective of Imam Khomeini (may God have mercy on him) with the aim of presenting definitions of Islamic science corresponding to these criteria. Using an analytical-comparative method and drawing upon library data, this research examines and analyzes Imam Khomeini’s works on this topic. In Imam Khomeini’s discourse, Islamic science encompasses a general criterion for the genuine sciences, namely the divinity of the subject matter of science, along with three categories of ontological, epistemological, and anthropological criteria. The most important among these are: “the dependency of possible sciences upon divine knowledge” and “the origination of the world of the unseen in relation to the world of the visible” as ontological criteria; “conformity with the divine human nature (fiṭrah), being a sign (āyah)-based, and being beneficial” as epistemological criteria; and “the scholar’s purity of soul, avoidance of all forms of ṭāghūt, religiosity, and commitment” as anthropological criteria. Each of these criteria in some way facilitates the identification of Islamic science as envisioned by Imam Khomeini, and the presentation of three types of definitions—ontological, epistemological, and anthropological—of Islamic science constitutes one of the main contributions of this article.
