Among the most important and controversial theological discussions is the issue
of Imamate. Employing an innovative method for its proof constitutes a significant step
in advancing Islamic doctrinal studies. Martyr Ṣadr adopts an original approach in establishing the principle of Imamate, combining traditional rational and scriptural methods with the method of probability calculus. To prove the Imamate of the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī (a.s.), he proposes three possibilities for the Prophet’s (PBUH) succession: negligence, delegation to a council, or the appointment of a specific individual as leader. Through a rigorous analysis of these possibilities, Martyr Ṣadr demonstrates that the
only acceptable possibility is the explicit appointment of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (a.s.) as
the Prophet’s successor. Furthermore, regarding the Imamate of Imam al-Mahdī (a.j.),
by examining historical precedents and the people’s acceptance of Imamate in early childhood, he deems it both possible and reasonable. Using a library-based and descriptive-analytical methodology, this research elucidates and evaluates Martyr Ṣadr’s innovative approach in proving Imamate and addresses Dr. Shariʿati’s objections raised against
his views within the discussion of Imamate. These criticisms largely stem from a misinterpretation of Martyr Ṣadr’s arguments, since he had previously responded to several of the objections raised by Dr. Shariʿati, though the latter had overlooked them.
