The present article, entitled "Assessing the Capacity of the Principles of Jurisprudence (Uṣūl al-Fiqh) in Theological and Philosophical Inferences from the Qur'an and Hadith," constitutes an endeavor to address the question of whether the principles of uṣūl al-fiqh can be employed in interrogating the Scripture and Tradition (Kitāb and Sunnah) within the domain of philosophical and doctrinal knowledge, and if so, to what extent such capacity exists. This study, conducted through an analytical-descriptive method, first presents the conceivable viewpoints on this question in both general and particular terms, and subsequently assesses the content of uṣūl al-fiqh in terms of its capacity. In the general approach, through a comparison between uṣūl al-fiqh and the two disciplines of theology (kalām) and philosophy—in terms of subject matter, types of propositions, inferential methodology, and epistemological dimensions—the points of convergence and divergence are elucidated. In the particular approach, the capacity of specific rules operative in this discipline is evaluated, and in a subsequent stage, the potential of these rules for inference from the Qur'an and Sunnah is critically gauged. The conclusion reached is that, in the author's view, a wholesale negation of the applicability of these rules to infer from the revealed text (alfāẓ al-waḥy) is unjustified; rather, through the refinement of these rules alongside alternative hermeneutical strategies, it is possible to attain philosophical-theological insights from the Scripture and Tradition.
